Raising an emotionally intelligent child is so important to many of us as parents, and it can seem like a daunting task. The easiest place to start is by giving your child the words they need to describe their emotions.

In this week’s episode of Miss Blossom’s Class, Finn learns that he can express his feelings and start to feel better by simply talking about them. Miss Blossom does a few exercises with Finn and the rest of the class that we learned in Dr. Lawrence E. Shapiro’s book, Learning to Listen, Learning to Care: A Workbook to Help Kids Learn Self-Control and Empathy. These great exercises are simple enough for you to do at home.

  • Try drawing a picture of your feelings.
  • Can you name some feelings?
  • What are some things that might make you feel happy? Sad? Angry?
  • Who can you talk to about your feelings?

Share with your children that you, too, have feelings. And when you start to have a strong feeling, go ahead and share that with them as well. They will see that talking about your emotions can come very naturally. And understanding how others feel is an important factor in getting along and becoming an emotionally intelligent adult.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s video! Have a great weekend with your little monkeys!
